Bacbuk - SnD
Nerves. Full of nerves is the best way to describe how I felt before arriving at the tournament. The preparation that goes in to this, the hours of solitude, surrounded by the sounds of war, with only your fellow man to guide you as you defend your country’s honour. I was even nervous about meeting my fellow clan mates. It is like having a pen pal that you have never met. Speaking to people for three years but never actually meeting them is enough to get anyone twitching. You get a snippet of their lives, their CoD lives, through the nades and the gunfire but meeting in the flesh means you get to experience that person on another level – like the game.
I was nervous about meeting the other clans as well, in person and in game. Underneath it all, I was scared of the embarrassment that may have happened if we were completely annihilated. It is one thing to imagine the other clan basking in their victory and another to have them come over to you and laugh in your face. Do not get me wrong – I was under no illusion that we as a clan were going to win but we were going to give it a bloody good go!
On arriving at the tournament, two things stood out to me. One - the age of the players around me, a lot older than I initially thought and two - the heat that hits you as if you are in the desert. It was that bloody hot! All I can say is thank God they had lifts. I brought my Cooler Master stacker case and I am so glad I attached the wheels. Carrying a 30kg case is not an option I was looking forward too. One guy decided to wait in the register queue with the same case and by the time he registered, he looked like he was going to pass out!
The event ticked all my boxes and was better than I anticipated. There was plenty of space and everything was laid out well. (Beer was always close to hand, thanks Rooster). Being among my own people, people who understood gaming, what it is, what it gives you and not having to explain my passion to anyone was enough for me. I was there for the love, the passion and the glory.
The atmosphere was light, not intense, until that is the gaming commenced. Seven hours of pure uninterrupted gaming, mentally hard and challenging, where you’re straining to maintain those high levels of concentration. Winning or losing did not matter, with each map came even more beer! During the tournament, my adrenalin kicked in and we destroyed the first three clans we played; Caution, Random and Wawaweewa a sub division of Hybrid’ all went down! The opportunity to look our victims in the eye, shake hands and laugh at them felt great! I always met them with biggest grin on my face, sorry but you cannot help it!
As the tournament went on the games got harder and the competition got tough. We played pro skilled clans; Trademark games, Infused gaming and Dignitas. Being honest, it went downhill from there. These clans are a few pages in front of the universal book of gaming. At least I left with the knowledge that we had a blinding game against Reason Gaming (who came 3rd). It could have gone either way but we were held to a draw, well-played lads. Seeded at 13th to come 5th in Group A was a great opening for us an eight-week-old clan! I am happy having met my fellow gamers and in the knowledge that the people make the LAN and that’s what I loved!
I would just like to thank all the lads I spoke to for making me feel welcome. RegularHero and Apollo great lads, just stop playing WoW! Hybrid you numpties, you just can’t hold your beers and next time keep Falcon on a leash. I will not forget Fozzy’s expression when Falcon used some choice words in the opening 5 minutes while we were setting up lol.
Well-played SnD a great start I believe.
